Earth Day: A Balance of Nature

Posted by Fernanda Romero

“We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children” is a well-known native American proverb whose words ring true as we commemorate this year’s Earth Day while reflecting upon our healing relationship with nature and ourselves.

It’s no coincidence that spring’s arrival and its alluring sight of blooming flowers and sweet fragrances carry within them a sense of delicacy, change, and renewal; reminding us of our ultimate home: the Earth.

Back to its roots…

Why choose this exact date as a way of commemorating and, most importantly, remembering to protect our planet? Well, what is now an international celebration acknowledged by more than a billion people, first started in the U.S. during the 70s.

The response was greater than expected: for over 5 decades, more than 190 countries have come together in what has become a wake-up call to act on current environmental issues such as climate change, pollution, and deforestation.

How can I take part?

In these ever-changing times, where health is now more important than ever, how can we take time to heal ourselves while cherishing and protecting our home? Is it even possible? Of course! The answer is within reach when opting for a sustainable lifestyle that is both beneficial to us and the planet.

Don’t know where to start? Worry not, achieving better habits is more attainable than you think when recalling the following: “Rome wasn't built in a day, but they were laying bricks every hour”.

Ok, ok, let us explain. What we mean is that by taking it one step at a time you’re introducing yourself to an experience of self-discovery, sustainability, and clearness upon a healthier, better, and meaningful life. And, as this is a path that we must walk on together, we’ve broken down 3 ways you can change your lifestyle as of today.

  1. Self-awareness

“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom” – Aristotle

We get it, taking part in tackling worldwide problems may seem impossible and even unimaginable at times. So, let’s start by focusing on ourselves and the things we can do to change the immediate spaces we have control over. Whether that’s your room, your household, your workplace or, you’ve guessed right: your body.

The key resides in taking a stance on your choices, reflecting on the impact you’re having on the planet. Ask yourself this: is it beneficial? Is it meaningful? Is it a reflection of my values and mindset?

Self-awareness is a journey of discovery, as well as introspection. Within the ongoing environmental emergencies, examining how your own actions, habits, and even thoughts may be harmful to the Earth is the best way to start moving towards an eco-friendlier life.

  1. Mindfulness

“Our life is shaped by our mind; we become what we think.” – Buddha

Have you ever heard that nothing is greater than peace of mind? Well, if that hasn't proven to be right, let us share with you that mindfulness is a basic human ability that has to do with how present and fully aware we are of ourselves and the things that surround us.

But wait, what does this have to do with the environment? Because mindfulness begins with a deeper, inner connection with yourself, it translates into a state of self-consciousness, as well as values like compassion, kindness, and gratitude. Overall, it allows each one of us to engage in positive behaviors and actions (such as a green lifestyle).

Still not sure about where to begin? That’s ok! Remember, mindfulness constitutes a way of living and, as such, it starts with small steps and habits. It's all about allowing yourself to be present and taking notice of who you are, where you are, and what's happening.

How about a yoga session at home? All in all, mindfulness, yoga, and meditation allow us to cleanse our energy and enrich the connection between mind, body, and spirit, all while allowing us to connect with deeper roots that can only be found in Mother Nature.

So, relax, set up the mood, light up a candle, fill up your senses with rich, smooth fragrances (remember, our sense of smell plays a fundamental role in our brain activity which, long story short, relates to how we feel and react), and take a break from this ever demanding and overwhelming environment that we’re surrounded in.

  1. Spread the word

“The journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” – Chinese proverb

There is a well-known saying about speaking only when your words are better than silence. And what’s the best opportunity to take pride in this than to inspire others into joining you in a sustainable, self-aware, and mindful way of living?

Let this be a reminder that a single person can make a difference in a path where it all seemed to be doomed. Nothing is ever insignificant as every single choice towards protecting the environment is both a gift to ourselves and Mother Nature.

As we come together to commemorate this year’s Earth Day, take a moment to remind yourself that there is no better way of cherishing and nurturing the world than finding a balance between life, body, and spirit.

Only on this journey of self-discovery, healing, and connection with nature can we find a path that leads us to a better, brighter, and —indeed— greener future.
